Great idea 👍 I really like this. Does it require use of the command line to make the mixtapes/playlists?
You cannot unsee de oeuf.

The quality of their hardware is very high and reminds me of macbook pros that I’ve had in the past. They test their laptops on Ubuntu, so if you choose to have that preinstalled you know that everything will just work. I’ve run Debian and Fedora on mine and both have been fine too. The other good things in my book are that they use Coreboot which is an open source bios and their customer support is excellent.
You should look at getting a laptop from Starlabs with Ubuntu preinstalled on it.

No probs :) You will love Geeqie then! Learn (or set) the basic shortcuts and a progressive marking/rating workflow and you’ll be flying. I used to absolutely hate culling but now it’s my favourite part of the process!

Just to put it out there: There are some excellent options for a linux-native photography stack which also work on windows and mac if you’re interested in trying those out before switching. Darktable and Rawtherapee are both excellent raw developers and Digikam for library management and light editing. You should find that you can pass files between each for a seamless workflow. If you did switch to Linux you would also get Geeqie which is blazing fast for inspecting, culling and rating raw files and is also interoperable with the above apps.
A really good resource for FOSS and Linux photography is pixls.us

FWIW .psd support in GIMP is getting pretty good. Not sure what your use case is but it might be worth checking out if you haven’t used it for a while.

I haven’t gone too deep with Krita yet but I did try out some digital painting in it a few months ago and the brushes and brush dynamics were really nice to use.

Definitely! There are some really powerful plugins coming out for the 3.x series now too and there’s even more great stuff to look forward to in the 3.2 release due out soon. Good times indeed 🤩

I am way too happy using GIMP now to make use of this.

Another angle:
This allows the government to continue neglecting existing networks like social services and community policing, which are the bits that actually need reinforcing.
Also, lumping the rest of us in with terrorists and mass-murderers dilutes the pool of intelligence that has to be sifted through. No doubt they are anticipating ‘AI’ will solve this problem.
What could possibly go wrong.

No, I haven’t written a blog post but I think I have some notes somewhere of things that I tripped up on at the time.
Edit: eh…
sshto a remote server? Damn sure that’s correct but I wouldn’t expect somebody with no self hosting experience to manage that.
It may differ between VPS providers but on mine there is a command line prompt available to use via web browser after logging in to their site. I would run the script there. I might put something on the YUNOhost forum suggesting to add a note about this.

Totally agree with this. There is also the fact that at any moment the president of the united states can weaponise dependence on american cloud tech to crash healthcare systems and entire industries all over the world.
Self-hosting needs to become the norm, and I think a big part of that is cultural. Apart from the whole ‘op-sec’ angle, by self-hosting you are contributing to a safer and healthier technology culture.

Check out YUNOhost. I had no prior experience with self hosting but was able to get it up and running on a VPS. Been up and running for over three years and afaict I have not been hacked.
Good question, I want an answer to this too.

Yeah I don’t mean for free. I think that’s implied by the “happy to pay (reasonably) for it” part of the comment.

This is an excellent idea and very valuable - thanks for doing it 👍

I’ve been thinking about doing exactly this but for the free and open source applications that I know well. Having a hotline/helpdesk would be way faster and easier for newcomers to make use of than reading forum posts scattered all over the internet that usually assume higher technical skill levels, or starting their own posts. I for one would learned way better this way and in many cases would have been happy to pay (reasonably) for it.
If anyone would like to get involved in setting something up let me know.

I see. I guess I don’t use some of the technology that others do, so I probably don’t have this problem to the same extent others would.
A GUI would be great. I wonder if something like Faircamp could be used as a backend to essentially make a simple static website which can be viewed offline with a browser. With a template it’s just a case of dropping files into a folder.
