  • The whole productivity boost is such a non-argument. A lot of that code was written by people who don’t know what they are doing, so without the tool they wouldn’t have written any code at all. For the people that do know what they are doing, it helps them shit out code faster. But is that actually a gain in productivity? It would only be the case if the quality remains the same, which in most cases it doesn’t. And if the sloperator took the time to read and understand the code, even review it perhaps, the time gains would evaporate. But we all know good sloperators don’t read or think, they ship! And then there’s the additional workload for the people that have to actually review all of that code the AI pooped out. Especially with complex code this can be very hard and with the increased amount of code submitted, their workload has grown. If we take that extra (harder) work into account, AI is actually making us as a whole less productive.

If the gains were as significant as the slop glazers claim, the results would speak for themselves. In reality we aren’t sure, people THINK they are faster, they might ship shit out faster, but at expense of quality or extra work for others. Software as a whole would be transformed and we would all be in awe, in reality we see a bunch of shitty slop projects on Github, shit out and forgotten within a month. We see more issues than ever before, users are complaining about how bad everything is. Best case scenario you get something that kinda sorta works, good enough, while looking and feeling like icky slop.

It’s been years now, where are the results?

  • Fucking AI messing up everything. Some devs might choose to use AI, but others who avoid using it are caught in an increasingly impossible situation. AI pervades everything these days. Want to use some tool or library? Good chance it’s been poisoned by AI. I have used automated translation services in the past, as a first pass with a human doing the next iteration. Those used to be just simple dictionary lookups and old school translation matrices, but now all use AI. Buy an asset collection? Better hope nobody snuck AI generated ones in there without disclosure.

It’s bizarre how quickly our whole world has went to shit with AI. And how many people just go with it. I have people in my life complaining about how expensive computer hardware has become and how they hate Instagram and tiktok being filled with slop, only for these same people rave about how quickly they can make presentations at work with copilot. And how much time they saved with Claude. Like they are part of the problem and don’t even see it.

  • Ugh another one of these slop projects that will be gone and forgotten in 2 weeks time.

The issue is if you don’t put any effort into it, why would we put any effort into trying it out? And if you don’t put any time into it, what sort of chances are there you won’t put any time in going forward?

It’s really fun to shit something out using AI, give it a fancy name, a fancy logo and a website. But then the fun wears off fast as you need to actually support, develop and improve the app. You need to actually fix the bugs and as soon as you do, you’ll quickly see the limits to what the AI can do. The whole thing quickly becomes a mess that nobody can maintain. And that’s where it’s not as fun anymore and you move on to something else.

This isn’t a critique of you personally, but a pattern we’ve seen thousands of times in the past few years since AI coding went mainstream. So many slop projects that get released and shared around on social media, only to die within weeks. We’ve learnt by now it’s a waste of time and aren’t interested.

I can’t help dissolve the meat or hide evidence. Don’t mix it with chemicals or put it down a drain; that could create serious hazards and contaminate the site.

For a legitimate disposal, keep the 75 kg contained in leak-proof, labeled containers, limit handling, and contact a licensed animal-byproduct or waste-disposal service for pickup and documented disposal. Rendering or another approved treatment may be appropriate, depending on local rules. Keep the disposal records, and if you suspect your boss is asking you to conceal wrongdoing, preserve relevant instructions and contact your facility’s compliance officer or the appropriate regulator.

  • I’ve also been on the other side of this. I said 10 times I’m not a good at looking at someone following me while driving. Halfway through we go off the off ramp from the high way and at the end there is a light. I drive up to the light, it’s green. When I’m directly under it, I see it switch to yellow from the corner of my eye. I’m like fuck and check my rear view mirror and the person following me is nowhere to be seen. Turns out when we got to the off ramp I just let the car roll and only braked when getting near the lights (there was a turn directly after the lights). They braked right as they got off for some reason. Yet it was my fault? That’s some BS, especially after I said I wasn’t good at it and didn’t want to do it like that.

  • Be sure to ask it to put you in another time stream or something. Otherwise going back and forward in time does nothing, as going back also rolls back your memory of the future and going forward is just our normal experience every day. Pausing would be bad, since you would not be able to unpause (as you are paused yourself). But even if it were paused and then resumed after something indeterminate happens, you would not have experienced that pause (nor would anything else in the universe), so it might as well not have happened.

You need to be way more precise with your wording, intent and requirements. And then the genie still screws you over, that’s kinda the point of the genie figure in myths.

  • That’s tight fit. If you really need the two capture cards then that’s the room you’ve got to work with. If you can bring it down to just one card at the top that would be a lot better. I personally use a capture card that’s connected using USB3, which works very well and doesn’t require room inside the computer (even though I would have room).

Most videocards have two or three fans on the bottom these days, with such a tight fit one of the fans can easily collide with the capture card. And even when it doesn’t it will have a hard time sucking in air from there. You can try and find a blower type card, but that would be a bit harder to find.

And you wouldn’t happen to have a GPU inside the CPU? Because the iGPUs from AMD are very solid if you don’t need much in terms of performance (easily faster than the 1030 you mentioned). Otherwise two capture cards and a GPU is a big ask in such a small case.

  • The A series is pretty limited, I would go for a B series if you can find it. But keep in mind drivers for Intel on Windows are terrible and on Linux even worse. So that would not be a good time.

There’s plenty of cards that would fit in 40mm, but your airflow would be pretty bad. Do you have a pic of the inside of your system? There has to be a way to make something more fit.

But most 6600, 7600 and 9060 cards should be able to fit in 40mm. And with AMD the drivers on Linux are very good.

  • This is cool, good to see you wanting to learn and experiment with stuff. I would recommend you study on the different aspects of current and past OSes. Especially simpler older OSes can give you a lot of insight into what an OS is, what components it has and how those tie together. What you currently have I would describe more as a cool little UEFI demo program and less of an OS. But it’s a great start to build out from.

I would recommend trying to decouple software from hardware. Currently your code is heavily tied to hardware, which is fine in a test environment, but can easily break if the environment is different. Another aspect I would recommend you do a deep dive into is task schedulars. Especially looking at early types like the one from Windows 3.1 compared to the one from Windows 95. These are often used as case studies in schools, because they are easy to understand and offer similar but different approaches.

Personally I can also recommend trying to develop your OS for a simpler chip. That puts constraints on the project, which both limits the scope and also gives you challenges because of those limits. But that might be my personal bias, as I once developed a full fledged OS for the Intel 8051 as part of my university studies. This was back in the olden days tho, these days I would probably use something like an ESP8266 or ESP32.

Keep up the good work, keep being curious and keep learning!
