1·11 days agoDefinitely not. It’s some consumer garbage laptop, because the build quality is visibly shit.
They aren’t blocking bootloaders, they’re blocking the firmware. It is an issue, but it isn’t as problematic. The only ones blocking the bootloader unlocks are capitalists, who want to profit from your data and break your phone when they need more money.

2·13 days agoYep, I would expect her laptop to be in the same or worse condition, if it was mine.
It’s build quality is practically nonexistent and if we expect the interiour to be like other HPs I disassembled, it’s probably hollow without any board protection whatsoever. Also, the fans are almost always full speed, even on moderate to low load (of the some gen of ryzen 5 which is actually decent).

3·13 days agoCool, so it’s way more durable than my Latitude 5290. I had my bottom cover screw inserts break when opening it. And the bottom panel is cracked in multiple locations. Also, recently had to reglue a display hinge, since it’s just glued on the plastic top panel via a metal extension (it also broke the bezel which I had to plastic-weld to reinstall it). But I also use the display frame as a handrest so it was doomed to fail. Also, I had to reglue or replace most of the rubber housing parts. Here’s my poor little laptop:

I kinda feel bad for this laptop coming into my aggressive hands.
I would recommend a Dell Latitude, but expect problems if you mistreat it like me. It isn’t a T430 or T440p, which survive everything.
Edit: the green spot on the photo isn’t a spot on the camera, it’s a plastic-weld. Yes, it’s all screwed with in weird ways, all by me.
Also, your laptop is in great condition, don’t worry about it, you treat it above-average-ly, unlike me.

3·13 days agoIt’s L14, not T14. My mom has one for(EDIT: at) work and the bottom cover is cracked. It would be fine if she didn’t use a 6-year old HP (also fuck HP), which is somehow still in mint condition.
Yes, a HP beats an L series ThinkPad in durability (but this is only anecdotal evidence, I have no idea if this is widespread).

2·2 months agoTo be fair, western governments are just afraid to also be taken over by Russia. They don’t give a shit about Ukraine, but why would we need the propaganda when that explanation is logical enough?
While Russia started the war, the war is starting to look like a genocide at this point (attacking the oil infrastructure which poisons civilians around the factories and refineries in Russia).

4·2 months agoWell, if you want a cheaper option, look at the Chuwi tablets, which are new around 250-300 and have some decent Intel CPUs and pen input.

3·2 months agoJust disconnect the antenas. In some cars, you can even unplug the telematics system.
Well, I think the latitudes are great to work on (at least my 5290). Just remove the Phillips screws on the back cover and you can replace practically everything. But it’s still way more delicate than the t440p (which is harder to accidentally harm.
BTW, HP is terrible. My 250 g5’s aftermarket (AliExpress) fan is alive since 2018, but the original died in a year. The original battery just died one day (probably a dead cell) and the aftermarket ones died in the same fashion. And of course the plastic started falling apart in 2019 from just moderate wear.
My 2018 latitude 5290, I bought used in 2023 needs just a battery replacement and maybe the thermal compound. I even dropped it many times and only needed mild bodywork (some plastic welding).
The upgradability depends, the 14s g5 has upgradable ram, etc.
Plus Lenovo checks the network cards and wireless/WWAN cards for authenticity, so no upgrades apart from the hardware which comes with the model), but I’m not sure if that’s still the case.
And also Ideapad-ness. It’s keyboard and touchpad are shit. If this continues, there might be only Dell and maybe Clevo left.
