  • Not all apps, review/travel sites get a pass, and the decision is left to the president, which is a dumb way to do it.

DIVISION H-- PROTECTING AMERICANS FROM FOREIGN ADVERSARY CONTROLLED APPLICATIONS ACT

Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act

(Sec. 2) This division prohibits distributing, maintaining, updating, or providing internet hosting services for a foreign adversary controlled application (e.g., TikTok). However, the prohibition does not apply to a covered application that executes a qualified divestiture as determined by the President.

Under the division, a foreign adversary controlled application is an application directly or indirectly operated by (1) ByteDance, Ltd., TikTok, their subsidiaries, successors, related entities they control, or entities controlled by a foreign adversary country; or (2) a social media company that is controlled by a foreign adversary country and determined by the President to present a significant threat to national security. (Here, a social media company excludes any website or application primarily used to post product reviews, business reviews, or travel information and reviews.)

  • Most millennials were born in the 1980s, smart phones didn’t come about until 2006+

Most of our lives were outside as kids. I got my first cell phone at 18, 2 years after I had already been working 40 hour weeks while going to school and my parents finally got sick of not having a way to get a hold of me. Comically their cell phone bill went down because the company I worked for gave them 25% of their bill when they added my phone so they didn’t want me to have a separate plan.

I still remember my mother calling me sometime that year and asking if I’d come to dinner and I had to tell her I was over 1,000 miles away because I flew to Boston.

I think I was 22 when I started staying indoors more. Took a desk job and got overweight and lazy.

  • Not sure that is true though. When I read the law it specifies that the President can choose to block ANY foreign owned social media site that they (as in the president) deems a national security threat. So Trump could in theory say ban RedNote tomorrow and it legally would have to be done. That said… he may be able to just say “bytedance is not considered a national security threat at this time” and that may be enough to let TikTok continue to be in the U.S.

I’d have to read it again to confirm

Edit: nah ByteDance got targeted hard, no dodging that.

Thanks, I found the first site and was looking through it. Some of it looks interesting, other parts are clear propoganda though. Things like this sow doubt in everything else:

Turning deaths from a virus into a game like comparison, and only cherry picking the information that makes one country look good. When in the end death rates were high.

    Example:

    Atlanta Falcons 28

    New England Patriots 3

Looks great… But the Patriots won the “game.” Honestly it feels gross to even compare deaths to games… But that’s what they are implying.

I like a lot of the other things they have to say though.

  • I mean its his choice now whether any foreign social media site is allowed online. That’s what they wrote. He doesn’t really have all the much to gain from it though. Most of his base wants it gone, so maybe he’d gain a few brain dead morons thinking maybe he’s not so bad, but in theory he’d also start to lose a few brain dead morons who wanted it gone. Looking at the Congress votes about it, “sticking it to the libs” would still be to keep it banned.
