Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why do both Northern Ireland & Scotland print their own bank notes?
22·1 month agoAt least for Scotland the reason is historical, before the union they had their own pound, so they continued to mint their own coin.
Scottish notes technically aren’t legal tender even in Scotland, but this because legal tender has a very narrow meaning in relation to court debts. They’re technically promissory notes, the bank of Scotland has to hold reserves of sterling notes to cover them, although most is in special £100m value notes. Banks will accept them in England, some shops will not because they don’t recognise them and think they’re fake.

Some of the best paid jobs for psychologists are working for companies to devise surreptitious ways to make people buy more.

They like making a big deal out of their tokenistic support of LGBT/BIPOC/etc, to distract from them trampling over workers rights.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•what's your take on employers banning the use of languages other than English between coworkers at the workplace?
402·8 months agoI was always told it’s a bit rude to use a language that not everyone present understands, since you’re basically excluding people from the conversation. Your example seems a bit silly though.
