Since I invariably wind up getting “name suits” types of comments, here’s the explanation behind it:
Around the turn of the millennium, I was trying to come up with a username to use on a particular site that had a shortish character count limit for usernames. My goal was something related to the fact that I would often be making my points in arguments with “holier-than-thou” types by taking what they were saying, and turning it on its head so the offensive stuff was directed back at them.
I also happened to learn shortly beforehand that many years ago “'ape” was somewhat commonly used as a verb to mean “imitate” or “copy.”
I’m sure you can figure the rest out.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Atari Gamestation Go $180 - Thoughts?English
6·15 days agoThe draw for me is actually the physical controls you don’t find on other devices.
Integrated paddle, trak-ball and keypad.
Still on the fence due to other compromises they made in the hardware. I’d also really love if I could install other emulators such as something for Amiga & C64.

11·15 days agoNot one that I’m aware of with that assortment of controls, unfortunately.
Integrated paddle, trak-ball and keypad.
Sorry, I feel the opposite. With each day bringing ever more absurd crap & destruction from this admin, waiting for the time for this all to be over with has slowed down and stretched out (like a horror movie hallway) to the point of feeling like this shit will never end.
The only way to make that graph make sense to me is if you added a toilet to the bottom.
The welcoming instruction “start boinging” was unclear, and now I fear I may be on the hook for child support…
I think we’ve found the next Godzilla enemy.
I’d have to get some liquid courage before I could get that into character.
Courage… to go without pants like Winnie?
Or my personal favorite, W2K?
Dunno 'bout you guys, but DJ Sex doesn’t charge - it depletes.

Nowhere Else To Share@sh.itjust.works•Why isn't there a Rubik's Cube emoji?

I’m glad you still manage have a more positive outlook on the future than I do.
Yes, my perspective is definitely colored by my experience in America, but if you think similar won’t happen elsewhere then I think you’re being overly idealistic - at least when it comes to the full population of the world. Those who enable the powerfully wealthy will certainly do better - at least until those who don’t are no longer much of a threat, and said wealthy no longer need their enablers.
If you compare recent history to a hundred years ago, sure. Now, analyze the trajectories of trends from that recent history and extract where things are going over the next century.
If improving people’s standard of living were actually the end result, but it’s not been the case thus far.
Hardly sad, first of all. Second, we’ve been reasonably successful, or there’d still be at least twice as many such jobs now (likely more). Third, recent advances in multipurpose robotics have a strong likelihood of having major effects in this area before much longer - especially when combined with AI tech.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Any opensource dictation(speech to text) application for windows?
3·4 months agoNo problem. In what is perhaps a bit of serendipitous timing, I also just came across this Android app which aims to make an Android device plugged into a PC via USB look like a standard keyboard & mouse - although it looks like your device needs to be rooted. If Simon doesn’t work out for you (I see the Windows version hasn’t been updated in over a decade, and even the Linux version has only seen sporadic activity), then perhaps this app in combination with the apps you mentioned in your OP could suffice for your needs (assuming you have an Android device since you specifically called out a couple of apps for it).

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Any opensource dictation(speech to text) application for windows?
10·4 months agoSimon is the only one I can find. I’ve no experience with it - just did some searching out of curiosity. Seems mainly for Linux, but the page says there’s Windows support, too.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•It Looks Like a School Bathroom Smoke Detector. A Teen Hacker Showed It Could Be an Audio Bug
6·5 months agoI doubt they built it with the processing power for that when the audio picked up from a large number of these placed throughout the building can all be routed to a central server with the power to follow people around and maintain audio contact wherever they go.

So, crates.
