2·8 days agoSome LEOs argue that the “compel” limits bit is limited to US citizens, and that even then, they can confiscate your phone if you refuse to unlock it. Plus, they can refuse to let you fly, confiscate your passport, or deport you to the country of their choice.
Em Adespoton@lemmy.cato Privacy@lemmy.ml•Which one is more necessary for mobile and desktop?
6·10 days agoOn mobile, firewalls are often created by creating a local virtual VPN that actually works as a firewall. As a result, you can only have one or the other enabled at a time.
If you’re on your own trusted network, a firewall is probably the better choice. If you’re on an untrusted network, using a VPN to a trusted network is a better choice, and usually you can set up a firewall somewhere along the VPN chain as well.
There are Meshtastic-compatible tags. These operate on unregulated spectrum and on the encrypted channel of your choice.

18·15 days agoWhere I live, most restaurants I’d visit have a sign up in the door saying “filming and photography inside this restaurant is prohibited without permission from management.”
If I see someone waving a phone around, I just wave at the nearest waitstaff and point, and they take care of it from there.
It’s tricky though, because a restaurant doesn’t want to get plastered all over YT or IG either. But at least they can point out the fact that it’s clearly posted on the door.

3·16 days agoYes, because you’re using an encrypted channel for all network traffic and your home DNS.
There are some ways that an activity hostile Wi-Fi network can route around some of that, but for most use cases, it provides you a secure extension of your home network.

3·16 days agoTailscale is free and is just a wireguard client/server; there’s apps for Linux/Windows/Android/macOS/iOS, and they shouldn’t make much of an impact. Of course, whatever network traffic you route over it could have an impact, but that’s up to you.
Em Adespoton@lemmy.cato Privacy@lemmy.ml•(noob question) Is it fine to use Tor on an unsafe network?
2·16 days agoUse Tailscale; you set up a single account and then install the client on the devices you want to connect. You can select one to be an exit node (one on your home network) and then all devices can connect to that device and transit to the Internet irrespective of port forwarding etc.
The one downside to this is that you do end up with an account hosted on Tailscale servers, but this becomes the only exposure point.

5·27 days agoWhich companies?
I know mine doesn’t. We have an overall pool to spend on salaries, that gets broken up by department, and it’s up to the line managers to allocate. This is usually done by comparing to the competitive salary range for the position and then layering on performance indicators for the individual based solely on actual predicted job performance. HR stresses to managers that they are NOT to use outside factors in the determination, but should talk directly with the individual employees if there need to be adjustments to either stay within budget or allocate raises.
Any place that attempted to pull this sort of stunt would be a place that would have to pay me MUCH more for the short time I’d remain working there while looking for new employment.

18·1 month agoIt’s like any controlled substance ban — unless there’s a really invasive crack-down it just shifts the problem to a less safe black market.
Making things easy and safe to access with controls that are adjustable is always more effective than an outright ban that shifts the access fully into unregulated territory.

7·1 month agoThing is, it doesn’t create a registry of what content adults access. Just what content their registered identity accesses.
Em Adespoton@lemmy.cato Privacy@lemmy.ml•EU Age Verification Project Mandates Hardware-Bound Attestation
90·1 month agoThe whole thing is wrongheaded in the first place; any child wanting to access adult-only content will use an adult’s account to do so; any adult attempting to access adult-only content is likewise going to use an adult’s account.
So unless they’re tying this to biometrics that are actually secure against an adverserial child, all the system really does is creates a registry of adults. And we already have those.

- Dryer exhaust
- Sewage stack vent
- Air supply for secret underground bunker
Em Adespoton@lemmy.cato Do It Yourself@beehaw.org•[Solved] Anyone know what this might be for?
5·1 month agoVents are designed to be venting, and that airflow is enough to keep moisture levels down. Stop the ventilation, and it just becomes a covered hole in the roof.

It might have been useful to say up front that you live in the US. Are you planning to travel domestically or internationally? All these things change phone availability and strategy for what you should do.
