IMO if you “just want box that make play video game go whee,” you should just buy a console (the Steam Machine, for example). That’s literally their purpose.
Anyway, if you, for instance, just buy parts using recommended parts lists (some of the review sites have good enough builds, or you can just use the brain dead “build with AI” option on Newegg), you could probably just pay a computer store to build it for you for a lot cheaper than $1k.
Or you could just read the manuals and build it yourself since the manuals are usually pretty straightforward with pictures showing you what to do. It’s basically just an expensive LEGO set lol. Really, as long as you can read a manual with pictures and use a screwdriver you’re pretty much good.

It’s configurable. The base model is $1k. Upgrading it goes upwards of $3k (dunno what the max is).

Sure, doesn’t really take that long to research and build it though, and in my experience if you get a prebuilt, most people aren’t gonna like get it serviced or troubleshoot it with CS unless there’s something seriously wrong with it. They’ll likely just live with minor annoyances.
The only significant benefit IMO is if you really end up needing to RMA something (like if the motherboard is shot), you can just RMA the entire thing instead of figuring out which part is messed up. However, I’ve had mixed experiences RMAing laptops before, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just as bad for desktops.
It’s definitely not worth $1k+ IMO. If I spent $1k more, I could’ve gotten a 5090.

I’m always amazed how much you get taxed for prebuilts. This thing is at least $1k more than what I spent (with a similar config), and the CPU is still worse than the one I got lol.
Damn, I got lucky. I rebuilt my PC like a couple weeks before the prices shot way up…
Lutris was pretty janky IME. Bottles has similar issues with Lutris and some very bizarre UI decisions (like IIRC you can’t delete bottle snapshots from the UI, so unless you manually go and delete them in the filesystem, creating snapshots just takes up an ever increasing amount of space). Honestly Heroic is kind of janky too and throws errors about login status half the time, but it generally works at least when it comes to launching the games. The problem is Steam almost always just works, and if it doesn’t work it’s pretty much always the game’s fault and thus I would have problems with any launcher.

I like the idea of NixOS and Guix System, but to recommend them to someone new to Linux is crazy.

It’s like 20 years old, with stable releases for over 10 years. How old does something have to be for you lol?

You’re talking about surviving without X. Well, we survived without washing our hands, showering, brushing our teeth, etc. for 99% of human existence as well. Better be consistent in your beliefs and return to living as a hunter-gatherer in the woods.

Should stop washing your hands or showering regularly if that’s how you decide whether something is important.

This is a fucking idiotic question. If naturally our bodies heal ourselves without issue and thus “natural immunity” is better than vaccination, then why do so many people die from illness when unvaccinated?
I suppose eradicating smallpox was a mistake. We should have just let 20-30% of those infected die instead of eradicating the disease through “unnatural” vaccines.
With the voice model already downloaded? That sucks, but honestly kind of expected with everything Google’s been doing lately.
Interestingly, according to one of his recent-ish comments, he left FUTO in February.
IIRC they all kind of suck. There’s Transcribro or whatever, but I don’t think it supports many languages (maybe only English?). I used to just use Google’s and then revoked network access.
Wolf also was spouting about how great Trump is and how “woke” shit is ruining society or whatever in January IIRC. I briefly trawled through their social media when I was investigating their keyboard, Grayjay, and Immich and promptly decided to never, ever give them money.
Note that their keyboard doesn’t require network (at least as of now), so if you don’t give them money or promote it to other people, they don’t really benefit.
EDIT: Also, there are claims Rossman has a Kiwi Farms account and is at least somewhat active there. I haven’t investigated those very thoroughly though.

From what I’ve been researching, Fairphones pretty much work after a year or two on at least Ubuntu Touch. It uses Halium though for that. It seems like the older ones mostly work after a couple years on postmarketOS, but crucial stuff like audio from the speakers is still broken or whatever. Security is pretty obviously gonna be worse than an Android phone no matter what you use though.

According to a review lol:
It also runs like dogwater, since Crytek still haven’t implemented multi-core support, therefore it’s pretty much as CPU limited as the original.

You can escape Windows, but you can never escape Recall.
The biggest risk in terms of human extinction is a government allowing an AI to make unchecked military (e.g. nuclear) decisions.
