6·2 months agoThe bad news for the AI goons is that the capitalists have squeezed us so hard that we no longer have any money to spend on the products we’re programmed to lust after. Not sure what the end game is.
Playing games with kernel level anti-cheat. Some of them were pretty fun. I get why they don’t support Linux, but it is still annoying.
The most acceptable loss for the Freedumb to own guns? I saw plenty of things making fun of him. Even before his body fully hit the floor. My favorite was a package of fruit gushers that had been altered to say Kirk Gushers and had his face with a flow of liquid coming from the neck.
Whether they are or not, they don’t cover his throat. Just puts a premium on accuracy.

13·5 months agoSeems like getting a decent answer out of an LLM for a novel problem requires a high degree of specificity and thoroughness in your prompt engineering. Seems like a set of rigid rules for specifying what you want are required to avoid getting broken slop. Fortunately, we have great specific ways of specifying what we want computers to do. We call them programming languages.
Well the other kids thought those of us playing Dungeons and Dragons in the early 80s were nerds. Didn’t help that we also made the best grades. We also didn’t dress like the cool kids. It’s hard to separate all of the factors that caused us to get bullied.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Do you feel AI is going to be as bad as the movies say?English
6·8 months agoIt will be worse than the movies because they don’t portray how every mundane thing will somehow be worse. Tech support? Worse. Customer service? Worse. Education? Worse. Insurance? Worse. Software? Worse. Health care? Worse. Mental health? Worse. Misinformation? Pervasive. Gaslighting? Pervasive.
Missed opportunity for a Coal Bear that’s black instead of brown.

3·8 months agoA recording of University of Oklahoma legend, Brian Bosworth, ranting about the University of Texas. I remember him saying, “I hate cows. I hate orange.” Pretty sure I originally heard the rant on AM 1310 The Ticket in the late 1990s. I have searched a few times over the years without finding it. Every year that passes makes me feel less likely to find it.

16·1 year agoA coworker of mine changed his voicemail message to start with the tri-tone that plays for a disconnected number (bah dah deet) followed by a normal voicemail greeting. The auto dialers delete the number from their list when they hear the tri-tone. It did confuse legitimate callers that were trying to reach him though.
Well, the gun would certainly improve my chances in the battle against fascist cops and soldiers. Political resistance is proving to be a failure. The Dems are already thinking that Kamala (proven failure) is our best chance against Trump 3.0 in 2028. No third-party will be viable by that date.
I have given up. Collectively, we’re incapable of long range planning. Climate change and non-renewable resource depletion are intractable problems. A significant number of us refuse to even acknowledge the existence of the problems. Things will have to get massively worse before anyone will have any success in changing approaches.
My coworkers, especially the younger ones, are surprised when they watch me work in vi. Lots of “how did you do that so fast?”
Vim. I used to use emacs in the mid-90s, but I just found that vi was more universally supported. At this point, I am too old and stubborn to learn anything else. I am really efficient in vim.

VI and vim have been my editors of choice for thirty plus years at this point. I also use set -o vi in bash.
