Open Source@lemmy.ml•Is there something like jellyfin but just for browsing?
1·2 months agoNp. There’s special app for movie and TV renaming for jellyfin and kodi
But how does this old pc able to run m$ wins that needs cloud account? The most unrealistic point is m$ has empathy on old hw and their users. That’s my point.
Really? You guys only complains about Roblox? Not the crt mon? Not the monitor size? Not the horizontal pc case? Not kids able to complete a full sentence? M$ would drop support for old kb and mouse if they can. Only linuxer would spare their love for old hw.
Enlightenment has animated wallpaper longtime ago including Linux
Kobo + Koreader
Ebook reader worth every penny. But I don’t want to pay big corp
I purchased a few stellaris dlc and they work fine. Not sure if you mean dlc.
Neonmodem looks really cool and support multiple backend. TUI is cool and definitely earns its place. Excellent for my old laptop.
But on the other hands, I wish we have a proper complicated non electron liked desktop gui. My browser probably has 1000+ tabs. So able to open multiple threads are must. But building this sophisticated desktop app is hard. I am really being spoiled by open source apps. And I am always thankful to devs’ hardwork.
the new one😂
I am surprised to unable to find this type.
Honestly, Linux has better support for the old hw, even better than m$ win.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Is Linux compatible with touchscreen/2 in 1 laptops?
2·7 months agoTotally agree. On the other hands, cheap laptop for us.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Installing Linux Doesn't Need to Change. The Experience Does.
46·7 months agoMy concern is we are solving a wrong problem from the beginning.
GNU/Linux is an OS designed by hackers for hackers(at least in my age). The target users should be admin, not end users like grandma. That’s why Linux desktop is never mainstream despite our community put so much effort on the user experience (but the effort has not wasted)
Before you yell at me, on the other hand, android (shipped with Linux kernel) has a great success because it’s dummy proof design. Even a 2 years old can mess around tablets by his/her own. We can invent million theories, argue and hate each other all days. But there is only one fact. The fact is that mainstream users enjoy the fruit of open source is brought by Android from tablets. Unfortunately, tablets’ gui toolkit is dominated by big corps.
When do we start to put focus on gui toolkit for tablets? We did try, but far away than enough. When do we able to admit new generation use tablets way more than desktop? Seeing the open source communities keep heading the wrong direction make me sad.
In server and gpu world, true. Laptop, desktop world. Not really. Most ppl don’t need that much computational power anyway.
Also, ppl usually not include the shipping, collecting ewaste and recycling ewaste in the carbon footprint cost. Our ewaste recycling is extremely inefficient compared to our manufacturing side.
For power, solar becomes so cheap now.
My rimworld works fine in my 10+ yrs old ddr3 desktop. Amd or Nvidia gpu are all fine. Spend more on ram for Linux built. The estimate lifespan of my new desktop is 10 yrs.
Linux gaming experience is okish. You really have to chk the compatibility because some games claim they support Linux, but not really.
Not trying to blame anyone, I just wish more ppl prefer old good stuff over new cheap stuff. Sigh.
Recycling those ewaste is a lot more expensive than manufacturing them. Of course that’s edge cases, but I think reusing old devices works better(and more environmentally friendly) for most ppl.
Nothing wrong with brain storming, just please consider reusing old devices when you start a cool project.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•GitHub - element-hq/ess-helm: Element Server Suite Community Edition
1·8 months agoPpl actually moved away from helm because lots of small helm chart is abandoned. And lots of ppl’s matrix already integrated with oidc. I prefer desktop app and mobile app. Haven’t looked into web ui. The real problem for matrix is the bridges: support is minimal, lots of trial and err; code is in beta, make me worried.

2·8 months agoEven without ess or this helm chart, lots of ppl can still run matrix in k8s. But it’s good to see them to release more open source code. Thx for the news.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•l am completely new in the world of Linux. I wish to build up a computer having Proxmox, MX Linux and casa os, also retaining windows.
1·8 months agoI would worry about your bandwidth, network infrastructure, security and even electrical bill wayyy before your Linux choices.
Exposing your data and services are dangerous without domain knowledge. In terms of storage space and bandwidth, vps are wayy under charge. However, learning experience is also valuable. Have fun.
Reading how-tos(may be the source code too) are all you needed. No need to listen random stuff from some random YouTubers. Ppl can read that time. Books and magazines did exist.
In general, I agree with your idea. But this time we are not talking about another todo app or YouTube clients which have so many similar projects. Open source community doesn’t have new cad in the last 10 yrs (roughly in my memory) so I hope ppl can support them more. I hope they can interact with blender more.
