In the times when it felt like a small community, someone was in an airport, I think and thought another person was on Reddit. They asked how they could tell for sure, and it was decided there should be a question someone could ask, where the answer would make it clear that they were a Reddit user. The question was “when does a narwhal bacon”. The answer was midnight.

So, why is it so uncommon?

Yes, I agree. So the choice is self host, with the risks of that but also the hassle for you and family. Or use a smaller service focused in privacy that might(will) get hacked eventually, or just hand your data over willingly.

It’s only accessible by those you share a link with to your personal child(ten) gallery. They don’t share photos with you, just access your child photos to comment and like.

It also has tools for recording things like height and weight as the child grows. It’s probably possible with a locked down j stagram account but I wouldn’t trust meta to not use the data nor to not change the settings over time.

A lot of the telemetry is sold to people as being in their benefit. Monitor installed software for updates, location data for weather etc.

If the companies had to document the amount they collected in cash for each user based on ads and send it as a mk though report, it might be eye opening. The source if the cash would also be good. So did companies pay directly or dodgy intermediaries and data brokers.

I juat moved to immich but i self host it which requires a (small) bit of tech skills. I believe they do offer optuons for them to host for you. Ente is another option. Google takeout is the way to get your photos exported. Once backed up to the service of your choice, cancel google one.

Be aware, youll need to manually delete all tge google photos day by day on the websote to keep using that google account. Took me abkut 2 hours with 1tb.the lock in and efforts tonorevent escape is crazy.

The tv show dune prophecy has a subplot about not using intelligent machines due to the risk of losing control. It was before the general anxiety about AI. I wonder if they will lean into that. A big part of the plot is also about tracking everyone via their dna and prompting outcomes based on that knowledge.

It would depend on the context. The response depends on who is asking, their openness to learn and the reason for the statement. In isolation, it appears inflammatory rather than factual. It can be both.

They will still infect them but they will be more obvious.

Hundreds of unusual comments and doesn’t engage with the local community. It’s a bot.

It’s partly why online discourse is toxic. There is a disconnect with th real world and online and no social stigma. On a small community instances there is.

The problem though, will be trying to manage which isntances need to be blocked as they are rampant with bota. If the fediverse grows and there are lots of smaller communities,.it will be harder to keep track. Currently it’s small and most instances with active users are familiar.

Most likely, they will. They are not elikely to infect larger instances. Smaller instances will spot them and ban them, I hope.

When we were on holiday in Malaysia as kids, we ordered room service one evening. My brother was a picky eater so we asked for a plain cheese pizza, expecting like a margherita style.

Instead it was pizza base with just some sad grated cheese melted on top. Didn’t taste great but just thinking about it makes me laugh. We waited about 40 minutes for that disappointment.
