Linux@lemmy.ml•How to get into linux and stay with linux?
3·3 months agoIf you can stand Windows a bit longer maybe learn FOSS alternatives tp the programs you use on Windows that are also available on Linux before switching. I did that, replaced almost everything I used with open source variants and then switching to Linux wasn’t hard anymore. I distrohopped a little but have settled on Bazzite. I’m not that much of a gamer but having NVDIA drivers and lots of other nice stuff included paired with an immutable distro is perfect for me. No fear of borked updates anymore (haven’t had one for years on other distros as well but updating was still always a bit scary. With Bazzite that happens in the background anyway, most of the time I don’t notice it)

3·3 months agoHa, I thought this was an email from FairEmail at first. That would have been wild. This coming from Scam Altman, not surprising 🤷♀️

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Difference between Mastodon and Bluesky
21·3 months agoThere is an official ICE account on Bluesky.
I’m in a similar situation atm and have also been looking at Thinkpad x13 as well as x390 and older Dell XPS models. I’m a bit afraid that 8gb of RAM might be not enough in the future (afaik most of these have soldered RAM) but so far I did not run into problems with 8gb on my current laptop. Generally Thinkpads and XPS have very good Linux compatibility from what I heard.
ARM and Intel should both work well, I think (this might change for newer computers in the future since Intel let go a lot of their Linux devs in 2025 iirc).

Linux@lemmy.ml•Bazzite has seen a massive jolt in growth over the holiday season, surpassing 50k active users. The Fedora Atomic image has gained 38.8k users total in 2025 since it began counting in April 🥳
5·4 months agoBeen a happy Bazzite users for over a year. Not much of a gamer but NVIDIA drivers that don’t require tinkering during updates (like with immutable Fedora) and being able to just use the old install until broken updates (sleep mode maybe once?) is sooooo convenient! Also people on their Discord (yeah, I know …) are generally super helpful.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•what's the best alternative for insta?
6·5 months ago+1 for Masto over Pixelfed, I have accounts on both and Pixelfed is basically a (very janky) “Mastodon but only image posts but also a whole lot of bugs and terrible UI”. The comment feature on Pixelfed is godawful (one of the worst I’ve ever seen), things like following or muting hashtags sometimes just error out etc. Never had anything similar on Mastodon ever.

Linux@lemmy.ml•I just wanted to compare FOSS Linux budgeting software
5·6 months agoIm reasonable happy with Actual Budget. I like that it has desktop apps that can sync woth a server that was easy to set up, I can import various things via .csv, rules to automatically categorise stuff are nice. I dont care about the envelope budgeting or whatever it’s called they’re on about but it’s easy to ignore / turn off.
+1 for Bazzite. Have been using it for over a year, if an update borks sleep or something, I just boot tge other partition, wait a week or two. So good!

So the main point is that Mozilla pretends that the translations feature is based on open source data (for lack of a better term for “people have agreed that their data can be used for training”) and that’s a lie, right?
