I didn’t mean I need them to keep it digital. I meant I don’t want my train of thought interrupted. A “take a number” and “now serving” sign would work fine, if it gated the conversation until I was ready. Or just they send a message asking to talk and wait for me to say “ok come on over”

poor heating/cooling. Usually offices aren’t a comfortable temperature for everybody.

not getting compensated for the commute. It’s a pay cut. Fuck you, management.

people that just walk up to your desk and start asking questions. Send a message like “can we talk about XYZ?” and I’ll get to it when I get to it. Though this maybe is a learned behavior from people who are bad at responding to messages.

I had a pair of coworkers that would chat over slack all day. One of them had a laugh. My other coworker at the other side of the large office would message me “what’s so fucking funny over there?”. I never knew because they never shared.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How many tabs do you have open on your phone/laptop right now?
1·12 days agoDesktop: 0. It’s off. I close the browser when I’m done
Phone: the number says 64, but only 25 “active”. I should probably prune.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why is it such a crazy idea that the public should own the means of production?
29·18 days agoRich people don’t want to give anything up.
Assholes don’t want their out-group to have anything nice. Even if it means they suffer.
Many people don’t know shit about fuck, and they’re just trying to get through the week.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is it just me or i feel life is getting more difficult these days?
22·18 days agoMy dad used to rant about how government should be run like a business,
Anyone who sincerely believes that is too fucking ignorant and or stupid to be taken seriously. They’re a hazard to themselves and their polity.

30·23 days agoAs with all things involving humans, you can’t really change minds with facts. It’s just emotions and peer pressure.
Not a bad post, but I expect it won’t sway people who aren’t already on board.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Lemmings who order cheese pizzas, have you always just ordered cheese pizzas or is that something that happened with age?
3·25 days agoI think a plain cheese pizza is slightly different than a margherita pizza. It won’t typically have the basil leaves, and the cheese is more uniform.
I’m thinking of like dollar slice pizza. Like these https://secretnyc.co/seamless-dollar-cheese-slice/
But I’m not a pizza-ologist.

3·25 days agoSpeaking on behalf of a friend, as I prefer toppings: they discovered that a variety of things give them body problems, and it’s easier to just do a plain cheese pie than to try to guess if peppers are going to upset their body today.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Lemmings who order cheese pizzas, have you always just ordered cheese pizzas or is that something that happened with age?
2·25 days agoThe antithesis of a cheese pizza is a pizza with toppings. It’s an idiom, so I wouldn’t recommend thinking too hard on it.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Netflix closes Oxenfree developer Night School, just a month after praising its new game as one of the company's 'most successful cloud game debuts'English
8·25 days agoBusiness Idiots. It’s a pervasive problem. The people making decisions are not the people doing labor. They’re often so far removed from normal life, that they can’t even relate to regular humans anymore. How is some asshole with a full time personal assistant and high six figure salary supposed to relate to someone making median income and renting with 2 housemates?
Fuck 'em. Labor should take back what it built.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Do you guys think the boycott against Playstation is gonna work?
2·1 month agoI suppose. But I remember old games came on multiple disks.
I also think that chasing every higher graphics has reached diminishing returns. Style counts for more than fidelity, I think.

33·1 month agoNo.
- most people don’t know about it
- many actual children won’t care
- many “gamers” are little better than children

Linux@lemmy.ml•Has anyone tried Amber for writing bash scripts? Would you recommend it?
3·1 month agoInteresting. I dislike writing bash scripts so this might appeal to me, but probably not before a stable 1.x release.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•The Steam Deck is Selling Fewer Units Than Ever Before, Likely Due to Huge Price IncreaseEnglish
51·2 months agoPrices are up. Wages are not. Video games are luxury.
We’re being fucked by the stupid rich.
I think there’s a difference between like a landlord and a property management company.
Property management that fixes stuff, cleans up common areas, and such adds value. They do labor that’s useful.
A landlord that just gets money because they legally own the place is not adding value. That’s what most people hate.
You can, of course, have horrible people assigned to manage the property.

2·2 months ago100%. I think a lot about one of my friends when trying to think about that kind of user. Smart lady. Advanced degree. Has her life together. Would absolutely not want to try to install an OS. Wouldn’t even know how to start.
But I’m confident if I handed her a Linux laptop, she’d use it just the same as a Mac or Windows machine.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Microsoft admits Windows 11 has a GDID tracker with no off switch, first documented publicly in an FBI hacker complaint
2·2 months agoRight. Inertia is the metaphor I used to express that idea.

I accept that your job likely has different cadences than software development, in addition to personal preference.
Most software engineers I’ve talked to don’t like being interrupted in the middle of some deep thought. Especially if it means shelving current work to check out something else
