Privacy@lemmy.ml•When did you guys start your privacy journey? How did you find out about the data stealing stuff?English
1·11 months agoI got bored when I was in early college. I already held leftest views and didn’t love a lot of what Google and other big tech platforms where doing. I started with Proton but honestly mainly due to there lack of even decent Linux support changed over to Tuta. I feel lucky that I did all of this about a year and a half ago so just before they shoved AI in everything.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Plex or Jellyfin for my Raspberry Pi?English
5·1 year agoI haven’t really used Plex a whole lot but I have found Jellyfin from a user perspective to be extremely easy to use. The quick connect codes are one of my favorite features.

35·1 year agoI also hate that there is never an option to opt out of this service either.
Not collect data that can identify people. Yes you have to operate within the law BUT you can avoid collecting data that identifies people. Also you can explain what data you collect and not pretend to be perfect.

2·1 year agoI’ve wondered if you could even if it was slowly build up a database of traffic infromation and have it be an opt in feature. Like I know in general in my city when things get busiser so I know when to avoid certain parts.

431·1 year agoThis makes me so happy I’m using Graphine OS. Also the entire idea that there “not storing my history” I don’t trust them. They have already been sued multiple times over keeping ingogneto data.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Challenges meeting new people without an Instagram accountEnglish
201·1 year agoI think it’s mainly two things:
- people fear reverse phone numbers look up tools more then the equivalent tools for social media.
- It’s viewed as less replaceable then just blocking somone on social media
I don’t really agree with either of these but it is what seems to be common.

3·1 year agoI can’t tell you if you should or not. I can tell you I DO NOT have it enabled and mapping service work just fine. Also I would recommend using something like CoMaps and not Google Maps.

2·1 year agoAs long as it’s implicit right and is a reasonable price I 100% will be getting it. I am willing to pay someone else to securly hold my (e2ee) data.
My advice if you want something with changing some habits that is pretty good Graphine OS would be a good option. I’ve been running for close to 3 months at this point I think. If you run the right apps it can be decently private and isn’t a huge inconvenience.
It’s really down to how much time you have and how inconvenientced you want to be. Generally the more secure something is the less convenient it can be. I find Graphine with FOSS apps and other secure services to fit what I want and need.

14·1 year agoI love your guys work and fully support it. I think libre software is the only way foward if we don’t want worse and worse platforms.
Question: Do you think Peertube will likely ever have a the diversity of content that YouTube has or with different motives for making content it may never reach that scale?
You seem to have all the same reasoning I did. It is nice to hear someone else confirm it. Also when I need to I still plan on using @tuta.com for things I want more privacy on.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Netflix Puts AI Ads in Paid Tier: Pirate Everything at This PointEnglish
3027·1 year agoI totally get the anger with Netflix. I fucking hate them as a filmmaker. But I really don’t think a long term solution is pirating content.
BUY CONTENT YOU LIKE
Is it more expensive? Of course it is, that’s part of an equitable society. Also it means you end up with content you really like and not a bunch of junk.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Blue Shield of California shared the private health data of millions with Google for yearsEnglish
2·1 year agoIt’s a great example of why I push for the use of technologies where I don’t have to trust companies to play nice with my data. If I use (correctly implemented) end to end encryption then you physically can’t access my data.

As another person said, why put all or a lot of your eggs in one basket (Proton)? To me the value in switching away from big tech is that I can deversify my services.
