Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What happened that caused you to call emergency services for the first time?
8·2 months agosometimes… the 911 operators had machines that connected to a shitload of audio sources simultaneously… think all emergency service radio bands (police/fire/sheriff) as well as the land-lines and cellular networks… this was back before texting to 911 was a thing.
i was always testing external radios and phone sources. the cell providers were the worst (at the time)… sometimes 911 would work for Primeco but not Verizon or whatever so each cell provider had to be tested independently.
it was just weird first doing it as i grew up terrified i would accidentally dial 911.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•I know this has been brought up before, but it's a little unnerving to see posts and comments I've deleted on ml show up elsewhere in the Fediverse...
62·2 months agothe fediverse is incredibly public.
its like having your own little radio station broadcasting into the void. once those waves hit the air you cant take it back.
deletes/edits are niceties… but the fact is you put it on the fediverse and everyone else gets to decide what to do with it.

106·2 months agoyes my world will burn when they crack into my jellyfin instance and magically break out of its docker container and then what? goo nowhere on its vlan?
literally thousands of self-hosted jellyfin/emby instances and the support forums are just chocked full of people getting hacked via it! so many!

Linux@lemmy.ml•Plex or Jellyfin for my Raspberry Pi?
64·2 months agoeh, maybe. for me it was opening a port and adding a dns record. took me all of 4 minutes
im kinda lucky in that my isp uses ‘sticky’ ips so while its not static, ive had the same ip for 5 years

its paywalling yourself
i feel this… i donate time to senior citizens, and its mostly mint upgrades from windows as they do not want to have to update their windows machines.
its very easy. they know many of their users are not experts.
ive been through many of these upgrades and have a dozen or so machines runnin mint… upgrading has never gone sideways on me. its one of the benefits of mint. their upgrade processes are very well tested.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•How afraid are you of talking to strangers in real life on a scale 1-10?
19·3 months ago1
theyre just people, with possibly very shitty opinions. your issue is weighting their opinions disproportionately to your relationship with them (none).
if youre happy with yourself, other peoples attacks hold no power.
also, i like to keep the old quote in mind ‘be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.’ as it helps maintain perspective when speaking to people who could react negatively.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•I once noticed that everywhere the products are, so to speak, dead, or rather, plastic, and completely nutritious. Maybe it's worth becoming a farmer yourself and eating truly healthy food?
9·3 months agoif i can make it to 60 on a diet of corn syrup, hotdogs and microplastics i think youll prolly hit 40
i get it, this shit sucks… but this is a bit hyperbolic

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•When did you guys decide not to follow the Bible
61·4 months agowhen i realized ‘gods word’ is man-made… and all humans lie.
the faith everyone talks about isnt faith in god. its their faith in the humans that fed them those fairy tales.

51·4 months agoim sorry, we couldnt hear you all nestled in your armchair like that.
we get it, you are severely butt-hurt by this for some reason. to each his own.
how about this… when you get a trans kid, you can handle the situation the way you want. in the meantime, you can mind your own fucking business and let parents be parents for their kids. let those parents chosen professionals do their jobs.
its clear you cant hear yourself being absolutely incapable of minding your own business. what are some other parents and their doctors decisions have to do with you?!
