My vote on this too. Had a Surface Go 1, small battery but elsewise superb. Got a 3rd gen, absolutely perfect until one day it wouldn’t charge off USB-C anymore. Sold that and returned to the 1st gen I stii had (all accessories are compatible), and it’s still serving just fine as a ‘quick errands’ machine. Both work out of the box with Arch. Battery life is good enough with TLP and extreme powersaving.

After that, connect the VNC client on the tablet to port 5900 on the machine and sail the mouse cursor over to it when selecting the screen to share.
There must have been a config for wayvnc somewhere, but I can’t find it. I don’t need to use this anymore after switching from a dual portrait setup to a dual LG DualUp setup, so that my screens are now pretty much square and the right way around. On the dual portrait setup, my screenshare would show up sideways in landscape :D
I have funky screen configurations too. What I’ve done is setup a headless screen that I view over VNC on a tablet and share that. On Wayland wayvnc can do this.

Nothing much – dd, support for ext3 which was the style at the time, and whatever the wired Ethernet in that old thing is. Sshfs would be nice.
No need for a graphical environment. One thing that might be broken is the graphics adapter, since the machine supposedly boots every time, but once it gets into the display manager, it freezes. I figured if I keep it in text mode, it might stay up long enough for making a disk image. I haven’t yet got on with the operation, so I don’t know what the machine has.
I’d love to noodle about with Haiku, MorphOS and such, but being hopelessly hooked on tiling window managers (Niri particularily), I’m just stuck on unixes…
Not the greatest; they need time to mature, so often the versions from a couple of years back are more palatable.
If you go with Arch, just sudo pacman -S pro-audio realtime-privileges ; sudo usermod -aG realtime your-user and get rocking (installs everything).
Scrolled a while and didn’t see it:
dd if=image.iso of=/dev/yourstick bs=4M ; sync
And what is yourstick? lsblk and determine by size. Use the device node, not a partition, e.g. /dev/sdb and not /dev/sdb1.
A font viewer, character map app and image / pdf viewer are three clear missing links.
No mention of Capitaine-cursors so there 👈
I’d be happy to see one more email client option. Using Geary now - nice ui but very limited in features. Been through quite a few in the past.
When you log out, have a script take screenshot, blur it and save to a known file.
Conf your display manager to use that file as background.
I’ve ran a 4 in, 4 out ADAT-CAT5 snake thingy on Linux, so 32 channels in and out. The remote end was synced via Word Clock with the Linux box providing master clock. RME RayDat for a soundcard, RME converters in the remote rack. Worked 100 % flawlessly, I even did live sound on it. ADAT is a ‘just works’ thing, go for it. You just need to understand that one device needs to be the clock master and others follow that.
One more for Inkscape - I’ve made antenna stencils that need millimeter accuracy with it. LibreOffice Draw is even easier and can do much of the same stuff.

Thanks - this is what I did with a ‘you had one job’ look beaming at the terminal after realising the hidden files were missed and indeed it did the trick.
The Linux way:
write a script: you can use the find command to find for example rars in a folder. find ~/thatfolder -iname ‘*.rar’ -exec uncompresscommand. Read ‘man find’ for specifics. Script’s first line is #!/bin/bash. Say ‘chmod u+x script’ to make it executable.
set up a systemd timer unit that calls a service unit that runs your script at intervals.
you can use something like for file in ~/thatfolder/* ; do sed trick that extracts the file extension and puts it in a variable ; case $variable in ; bunch of cases for different extensions. Variable $file will hold the source file name. Read up on bash scripting to figure it out.

Let’s also remind that at least Helix the very good editor automatically runs bash stuff through Shellcheck if you have it installed, while you type. It’s been amazingly useful and educational. I write a lot of bash at work and have learned many finer details from Shellcheck’s hints.
It even does the Clippy thing. I’m piping something into a sed s/…/… and it tips ‘try ${variable//search/replace} instead’.
