I once heard holding a mirror up to society is something. Can’t remember if its comedy or tragedy. Im not real sure anymore if there is a difference.
On the one hand, yeah plenty of things are bad without being distractions. On the other hand, leaning hard on the Epstein files seems to be the only thing that destabilizes the right.
While it might not be factually correct to call everything a distraction from the Epstein files, it is rhetorically effective.

I think the author is lementing the fact that people are stuck on whats rhetorically effective when the state of things is past that.
Sure, but it seems like the best chance to fix the state of things is to cut out the rot, and in this political climate it seems like the only way to do that is hammering the files. Nothing else has had any effect on the base.
