Sharing a project I maintain. WebBrain puts an agent in the browser side panel: it can summarize/answer questions about the current page, extract tables and lists, fill forms, and navigate, using whichever model you configure (llama.cpp/Ollama/LM Studio locally, or any OpenAI-compatible API).

Some things that might interest people here:

  • Plain vanilla JS, same codebase shipped for Chrome and Firefox
  • Works with small local models: context trimming, a compact prompt mode, and a narrow tool set
  • New MCP server, so Claude Code / Codex / OpenCode can use your real signed-in browser via the extension

Contributions welcome, especially site adapters and bug reports with a URL + the task that failed.

Clearly doesn’t get the audience. 😂

New account and only two posts, which advertises their slop-agent plugin that’ll probably log all your activity.

Yea, I think you’re about right.

you can do the opensource thing and fork it to remove the features you dont like.

also i have not looked at the src myself but its main purpose is use with local llms which can be reduced to mean: all your generated and collected data stays on your device.

You’re not wrong, at all. But I’d rather not use a plugin that:

…can delegate a task to WebBrain running in the session you are already signed into — cookies present, SSO already passed.

I really don’t like the idea of running some random program/plugin/whatever in a session where it can access all of my data.

While Lemmy in general has a rather negative sentiment towards AI, that doesn’t mean there’s noone interested in such content. Especially when it comes to open source, open weights and full control (local/self hosting) AI can be a useful tool from my perspective where I see little reason to reject it just out of spite.

Even if you fundamentally oppose AI, I think it’s good to catch up with the news. I also read (and upvote) news about Trump, Musk, Putin etc. That doesn’t mean I agree or support their actions, just that I appeciate the information.

‘open source’ posts on social media these days appear to predominantly be ai crap

At some stage it is highly likely that will lead to significant government restrictions on open source because ‘unregulated ai’ cannot be trusted, and is always ‘escaping’ and ‘hacking’. The powers that be are already able to manipulate the general populace against open source, they don’t need our help.

      +1

I would suggest isolating any agentic stuff as far as possible - either a virtual machine with NAT (no access to loyal network) or a separate machine behind a string firewall.

Guys, I am talking to all the zealots people who loudly open their mouths to talk down anything referring to AI.

AI is here to stay. Like cars after horses. Like guns after swords. Like h-bombs after mortars. The sooner we regulate it, learn how to use it ethically and safely the better.

Just asking for it to be deleted or forgotten has never worked in human history and never will. As well as blindly criticizing whoever uses it for any reason has never worked out and, again, won’t work.

Let’s regulate it. Let’s fight for an ethical use instead.

What type of people own the ai companies?

What type of people are pushing ai?

What type of people are approving the ‘data centres’?

You can have your opinion ai bro, but that is all it is

Using guns and hydrogen bombs as suggestions of positive progress, then using the word ethical, smh.

I think your personal bias is obfuscating your understanding of my post.

Are you assuming cars are a positive development unlikely bombs or guns? None of them are. I was not making positive examples, exactly as I am not defending AI as it stands today.

You got it all heads and tails my friend. Go read it again.

what happens when these companies are seized by the people? you are opposing a company, that’s fine, but another thing is opposing the technology, built by workers and expropriated by the bourgeoisie. who owned the rail companies? what kind of people pushed for rail infrastructure?

one day techonology will advance and it will not require vast ammounts of water, energy to run these things, they will be owned and trained by the people. what will be your opposition to it then? you’re literally getting butthurt over a calculator bro, take it easy.

How is giving something, that is nondeterministic, access to your web browser a good idea? How do you guarantee that it doesn’t enter sensitive information without the user’s explicit consent? How do you guarantee privacy and security?

I’m skeptical, but I am genuinely asking and willing to listen.
