I am very happy that the FP5 is a proposed “main” device 🥳
I am and I’m not at the same time because the FP5 isn’t super easy to get in the US. The FP6 plus is the first one that’s actually sold here.
Support for the FP6 is progressing very well independently of this, so I wouldn’t worry. :)
Yeah, true. I fully intend for my next phone to be running Nura, no matter how much shit I have to put up with. I do need the basic functions of a phone to work, though. Speakers, microphones, call, text, mobile data, and Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. I figure the touchscreen is a given.
For me the big problem is the camera. Ideally I should probably carry a proper camera with me at all times, but that’s just not realistic. I really value the pictures I take throughout my life so I need a phone that captures things well.
It seems for now Ubuntu Touch does a decent job with Android camera drivers, but Nura has a long way to go on all devices. I trust it’ll get there though.
For me, the camera is totally unimportant other than being able to scan QR codes and do pinch to zoom so that I can read print because of me being legally blind. But as far as pictures go, I basically never use the camera.
Pretty much as long as it can scan QR codes, I’m okay with it.
Me too, and I wanted it working last year. I considered GrapheneOS on a Google Pixel 9 or 10 Pro with the Google camera app, but installed /e/OS on a Sony Xperia 1 V with the Sony camera app. Relocking the bootloader is forbidden by Sony.

Yeah, I’m also using /e/OS for the time being. The Fairphone camera app is officially supported for /e/ on Fairphone 5, so no compromise is needed. I just don’t want to stick around on Android forever. :)
It’s kind of neat that they are going for it as well as an SBC (easier for developers to work with) and a more affordable and accessible device (the Motorola Edge 30)
Me too! I bought mine hoping I’d daily drive mainline Linux on it by the time I was done, with this development that seems somewhat plausible.
Would be interested to hear @themightycat@ani.social chime in with any reflections and/or plans to work with Nura to get a device maintainer team going! I can see reasons not to—contributing upstream directly without having to work in a team is probably more efficient—but there might be reasons to consider it as well.
Whether it works for all contributors or not this seems like a really neat development and I’m happy to see what becomes of it. Especially for the Fairphone 5. :)
This seems like a very good development, but as for joining a team i am open to the idea but not sure if i will apply. Especially considering most of the work is already done and maintaining it will now be done on the list.
I’ve been following your FP6 and I love it. Thanks fir all the hard work!! I drive an FLX1s for daily-driver but hardware is notable (low RAM crashes sometimes) and performance is okay’ish. I may switch to FP6, looking at your hardware enablement and ofc, donation to you :)
The Fairphone 5 needs the extra work enabling the components.
I’m still on the fence on which OS I should fully commit to. On one hand, Ubuntu Touch feels much better for navigating an OS with a touchscreen and is a bit more secure (I think). On the other hand, Nura has way better application support.
If they can get a few phones that everything “just works” I think Nura will be better for linux enthusiasts coming from android. I have a Fairphone 5 with Gnome Mobile installed and it feels at home, and a very similar UX with how in would use a phone under android, with how apps are switched and how the phone interacts (pull down quick settings for wifi/GPS/notifications, etc) obviously android is more polished with features. But I like it better than Ubports UX, and I’m not a fan that Ubports has to have custom made apps while also not supporting flatpaks.
Though both are a success for getting linux ecosystem on a phone, so I’m not hating, I just prefer the UX and apps support of a project like Nura better.
Nura needs to become secure.
It is called Duranium!
So do I…
You can do it!
Nice I have a motorola Edge 30 that lost the signal frequently so I had to abandon it (LineageOS). As it was my daily driver I didn’t have the patience to try to fix it. But I definitely know what I will do with it in the future!
