Edit: I made a mistake, I meant to add Mailfence instead of Fastmail, but forgot to update both the icon and text
Hey everyone, here’s a follow up to my previous post, I tried to summarize all your suggestions and these are the options I have for the main Proton products I’ve been using.
I removed Bitwarden based on your feedback (basically they’re enshittifying).
I’m not including Tuta, because I dislike their UX/UI, also they seem to not apply their LLM policy to their own devs.
I’m not including Mullvlad, because of one of the founder’s donation to a far right political party in Sweden, said founder has a blog post to justify this, which links to another blog post where he claims to be a libertarian anarchist which is just another word for Ancaps which is a dealbreaker for me.
A lot of people recommended using one’s own domain for email stuff, I forgot to mention I do have a custom domain, which will make migrating a lot easier indeed. Just need to update my accounts credentials.
Let me know what you think!
replace KeePassXC with ChiPass, which is a fork without AI
Migadu supports custom domains is one of the few email providers that does not limit the number of domains, aliases or mailboxes. Instead their pricing is based on storage and the number of emails received and sent.
I’m going to give Mozilla’s new mail service a try next weekend. I think it’s called thundermail or thinderbirdmail.
I can’t switch again, for the love of god(s) I’m old and tired.
Would you consider NymVPN? I’ve been using it for a few months now and it’s pretty good. It’s backed by PhD level Cryptography and it’s open source but the parent company is still for-profit. I think it’s an actual good use of blockchain too. Also it’s decentralised! Fedi should love it but I never see it mentioned.
will add it to my list, thanks for the suggestion!
What’s the thing with ChiPass vs KeepassXC?
No idea, but the chip ass (this was autocorrected but I’ll leave it :D) repo seems like a clone of KeepassXC…
They’re porting KeePassXC to Qt6 and banning LLM usage.

Why are you using the GOP logo? This isn’t an American-centric issue.
Just put a Swastika. That’s what he apparently stands for now.
I would recommend doing a little more research into Mullvad and not rule it completely. I had the same stance until recently when someone pointed out a few facts.
The Örebro party is actually pretty interesting. Most of thier policies are pretty reasonable and forward thinking. Other countries would love to have some of the things they are advocating for (shorter work weeks, free public transport, and lower politician salaries, to name a few).
Just because one of the founders donated his own money to the organization doesn’t mean the company as a whole supports it.
Many of the VPNs being suggested may not have founders with crazy political views, but in my experience and other research, they are either extremely slow or have very few servers.
I will be switching to Mullvad in the very near future.
Literally Hitler wasn’t that bad of a person. He was a huge animal rights activist, he spent a lot of time and money improving Germany’s transport infrastructure, and let’s not forget all the scientific strides under his leadership! /s
Ah yes, remigration & calling nonwhite migrants “parasites” is quite forward thinking.
It’s still money that came from the profits of the VPN. A very substantial amount too. I’d like for you to reconsider the VPN choice if possible.
@inlandempire@jlai.lu , I think you may be inadvertently making a mistake excluding mullvad and bitwarden.
Mullvad is an excellent vpn service that provides unparalleled security, privacy and anonymity. If security, anonymity or privacy could have an effect on your safety then consider weighing that safety against your concerns about its founders political donations.
I currently have active subscriptions to mullvad, windscribe, proton, ivpn and airvpn. If I had to go down to one it would be mullvad, if I had to go down to two I’d add air for piracy.
Windscribe is the one I won’t be renewing. It’s complex, confusing, frankly expensive for what you get, has an awful app and config file generator, constantly seems to radiate incompetence and I think their style in general is cringey.
Proton is what you’re leaving and to be honest I’m probably gonna replace it with Nord. It’s “fine” but I can’t effectively automate its use on headless systems so it’s gotta go.
Ivpn is pretty good with a couple of caveats: it’s still possible to screw up and make an account with pii that the company can be forced to divulge, there are many examples of this vector causing people problems with other services. The company has not faced the same scrutiny as mullvad, however that’s a very high bar. What truly is a dealbreaker is how few servers & locations ivpn has and how not great the speeds are.
Airvpn is a piracy service. Theres no two ways about it and it’s great for that. I wouldnt bet my life on it but it sure does allow port forwarding at a decent price!
Mullvad in comparison is simple, reasonably priced, has plenty of servers and locations with good speed, has the best vpn apps I’ve seen, you literally can’t make an account that’s not anonymous and has passed the most intense possible scrutiny I know of for a vpn.
If your life or freedom depends on it, you should pick mullvad.
Many companies with some tie to politics I disagree with produce extremely high quality products and services that I rely on. It is particularly hard to avoid in the gun market but is certainly present in security as well.
Of course if the vpn is for getting past the company firewall so you can look at pornography on company WiFi or something, feel free to disregard this.
I brought up bitwarden but I’m tired of tippa tapping out a post so just imagine an equally long description of how it’s good and the problems always seem to turn out to be overblown.
I’m not sure I understand why the need for multiple vpn at same time?
Mullvad for phones and personal computers because its app gets updated often and is generally very good on phones especially, air for seedbox because it has port forwarding, something else to use in automated scraping.
I ended up with that many active at one time because I wanted to try some of the stuff that gets recommended all the time and between a full crontab of content grabbing scripts and a couple of hermes instances I was running up against some of the guardrails of a normal user account too often for comfort but some of these VPNs fucking suck. I’m getting my money out of em but damn.
E: for anyone reading this the part I am not talking about and will not talk about because of the direction enforcement is going are residential proxy networks. If you also do content scraping or use llm harnesses to acccess data on the web, rpns are better than VPNs. Get in now before they become target number 1 for all government cybercrime dildos.
We used to enjoy using Proton, but over time, it began to resemble a large, impersonal corporation. Moves like the introduction of a “workspace” plan or tendencies toward monopolization are clear indicators of this. Switching to Disroot—a far superior alternative—has been invaluable for us; Disroot truly values its users. Although they are experiencing some issues at the moment, it’s not a major concern—every system encounters problems from time to time, and we are fully confident that these will be resolved soon. We highly recommend Disroot as an alternative to Proton; it is, in a word, a fantastic service.
This reads like an ad from LinkedIn
This is not an advertisement; it is simply a genuine, long-term user experience.
I like Infomaniak, IVPN, and Bitwarden
So, guys, I’ve had a pretty great experience with GMail, from a small company… they index the Internet, whatever that means. Anyway, the sign up is free and and I don’t have to bring a domain… again, not sure what that means, but it sounds nice.
It sounds perfect, I sure hope they’re not evil or something

It’s funny you should mention that, because they go out of their way to specifically say that they aren’t!
I always felt it was just a company telling me to not be evil. Rules for thee not for me, if you will.
I believe 'em. Especially after they bought a co called “doubleclick”. Not sure what that is, but they probably invented double clicking with my mouse buttons. Or sth like that. No way an evil co would be giving us stuff like that.
“Don’t be evil” seems like an aspirational sentiment rather than a reflective one. Like an addict writing “don’t do drugs” on their todo list.
Guess they should have aspired harder.
Also, the storage they offer increases constantly in real time. There is a counter on their page if you wanna check.
i had enough struggle to convince my friends to switch away from google, im sure as hell not getting them to switch again. especially not when i am the one paying for the family subscription
I think it’s fine. Proton is still better than big tech. I want to move away from Proton for myself but that’s because I am not tied to an address (custom domain) and am happy to do the switch. I would still encourage Proton over big tech for regular people. We do the best we can do.
I’m confused… If you’re the one paying for it, why do you need to convince them of anything? They can come along or pay for their own services.
it was unfortunately worded. the reason they switched at all is because im paying. if i stop paxing they will just switch back
That’s their prerogative.
I recently made a post asking for email providers, and no one has yet mentioned Mailfence, I hadn’t heard of it until seeing this post. What are people’s thoughts on it?
I posted about it in another recent thread. Long time user and I am happy. But I only use some features despite paying. They historically had free accounts, too, but unsure what they offer now.
They still have free accounts. I tried to sign up, to do so I needed to enter a backup email. I used a simplelogin one and now I’m blocked and have to wait 24 hours to try again 🤦
Interesting! I tried creating a new account with my mailfence email and it just told me no. There was a point where I experienced places balking at me using that domain, perhaps they have had to tighten up registration.
Just a question, is there anything wrong with just KeePass?
KeePass is proprietary. KeePassXC is open source. I have experience with both and I find XC much better in many ways.
Thanks. I’m so used to KeePass that I just can’t get used to XC. I don’t like keeping the database open. I’m OK with XC on laptop with fingerprint reader, but on desktop, it just feels unwieldy. Also, I like to manually synchronize files between devices, because then they act as backup. And I can’t run syncthing at work.
But in that regard KeePass and XC work the same? Both just use the DB and lock if want them to lock…
No, but you need to backup/sync it yourself
I meant non-XC KeePass. You have to back up XC manually as well. But I think I saw someone saying something bad about KeePass without XC or DX and I’m curious now.
KeePass is made with Windows in mind, so it might not have come across OP’s radar if they don’t use Windows.
I’ve tried running the OG KeePass on Linux but it’s not nice sadly… Prefer the UI much more then KeepassCX
