Linux@lemmy.ml•Bottles' Founder Has Managed to Run Microsoft 365 on Linux
2·2 months agoDoesn’t outlook support imap?
Officially, it can. Many organizations turn IMAP off “for security reasons.”
Edit: Microsoft routinely turns off features for security reasons, so this comment may age poorly, if not already.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Capcom Removes Denuvo From Dragon's Dogma 2 and Updates System RequirementsEnglish
12·2 months agoYes. I was interested until I realized it’s Capcom.
Capcom needs to work much harder to rehab their reputation with me. I recall them adding DRM to games where, to me, it made no sense. Including weird, seemingly random timing for the change.
I get how there’s an argument to be had about fair online play, and stopping early pirates. But sometimes Capcom seems to me yo just be rolling dice, or trying yo meet an internal DRM use quota.

Linux@programming.dev•Debian developer Antoine Le Gonidec resigns after option allowing corporate LLM use without disclosure wins vote
22·2 months agoBad llm code is just as bad as bad human code.
Bad LLM code is worse than bad human code. LLMs sanitize out markers that humans use to catch and correct mistakes.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•No degree, no Polish, but I know Linux and homelab. Can I get an entry IT job?
7·2 months agoLots of organizations have a “ooh scary Linux” server or two that they rely on, but failed to retain the talent needed to maintain it. If you’ve been running desktop Linux, and know some basic command line tools, you’re way ahead of most people they will interview for the role.
The downside is that they might feel that they can maybe just keep ignoring their problem for another year, and some will.

2·3 months agoReally meta can’t figure out are we humans or not with this massive of data they collect?
That part really pisses me off. Asking for any kind of identity verification is just them gas lighting their users.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is something that is growing because of young people?
25·4 months agoThis sounds a lot like gripes that older generations have always had about younger generations.
But this younger generation is the youngest one yet!

Linux@programming.dev•Debian Testing as a daily driver - can anyone share their experience?
2·4 months agoOh, yeah. None of my usual techniques would help get newer KDE on stable.
I guess there’s a chance it’s in back-ports, or will get there soon.

Linux@programming.dev•Debian Testing as a daily driver - can anyone share their experience?
3·4 months agoI can’t comment on Debian Testing.
I just run stable and pull cutting edge stuff from back-ports or flathub.
For some fancy stuff there’s usually a .deb file to download from the official site.
If I’m really desperate, there’s always piping a curl command to sudo, if I really really trust the provider.
I’ve daily droven Linux for ~3 years and learned a lot
I don’t have any thoughts on certs that haven’t already been shared, but some thoughts for any interviews you may land:
- The person interviewing you has probably daily driver Linux for 20 years, and that’s okay. We all have to start somewhere.
- There aren’t going to be many others (if any) interviewing who have daily driven Linux for three years.
So be humble, but not too humble. Haha.
We’re a neat bubble here, but running Linux as a daily driver is still pretty rare, and puts you way ahead of the pack of other candidates, at least for entry/early Linux systems jobs.
Edit: And if you find an organization that uses AI spicy autocomplete to do entry level Linux admin work, run far away. There’s not enough money in the world to make it worth working with people that stupid (who choose to use hallucination for problems that demand reliability, haha).

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•U.S PC shipments drop 7%, market isn't expected to bounce back until 2029 — price hikes and component shortages take hold as PC market declines, Omdia report suggestsEnglish
1·4 months agoWhat’ll get really bad is when the hardware OEMs become insolvent due to high prices killing consumer demand for their products, and then we are left with few to no options for PC parts.
They’re certainly on their way. The Raspberry Pi foundation, and many clones give me hope for a future for personal “hobby” computing, at least.
I tolerate continued existence out of a morbid sense of curiosity.
That’s beautiful, in it’s own way.
I felt that way at one point. It led me, eventually, to moments that I later decided mattered very much, to me.
If I hadn’t had that morbid curiosity, I’m not sure I would have made it to those moments I now cherish.
Here’s to morbid curiosity!

Privacy@lemmy.ml•When is it time to switch away from youtube?
1·1 year agoYouTube with a custom app seems to be the best way to actually watch your own chosen subscriptions, rather than bent force fed by the Google algorithm.
I’ve heard folks talk about how to get this from regular YouTube, but it’s wild to me that that put up with having to go to all the trouble with the official app.
Opening a PO Box in person should avoid this issue.
