2·9 months agoEh, Trump and company are morons with the worst solutions for things but some of those things are real. Blue collar are the ones to shoulder the cost of your country deciding to be global reserve currency issuer and they need to be compensated for it.

Finance@beehaw.org•US Treasuries sell-off deepens as ‘safe haven’ status challenged
4·10 months agoMoney market instruments are usually short term and backed by companies that rival smaller countries in size so it’s not given that they will get hit beyond what’s happening due to overall chaos. Junk bonds got hit first because they’re just risky, now treasuries join the gang but this part was intentional. Fixed income is still going to be safer than equities or derivatives overall.

Finance@beehaw.org•US Treasuries sell-off deepens as ‘safe haven’ status challenged
9·10 months agoLittle spoken about in serious financial mags (maybe they’re scared what it means) but what Trump is doing is basically retreat from the USD being global reserve currency. Nobody stores USD because that doesn’t make money, the easiest way to do that is with Treasuries. They’re accessible, liquid, and backed by the issuer of the de facto global trading currency. They also allow US to borrow with no limit realistically.
Right now US is taking on massive amounts of debt and imports while exporting their currency to provide stability in the global trade. That role was filled by The British Empire before, it’s a known mechanism. For the neoliberal democracies that worked out fine but it didn’t work for the working class or the global south because the way US wielded this power was rather irresponsible if not malicious. Changing USD status in the global economy might be beneficial to the Americans in the long run but it has to be done in a more coordinated manner across multiple decades probably.
China sits on a ton of US Treasuries. Being the biggest foreign investor was their insurance against what US is doing. I have no idea how much this will explode but I have a suspicion Trump might be brought to submission by the sheer reality he has brought upon himself very soon - not from retaliatory tariffs but from general Treasury sell-off. Some say China will want to make CNY/RMB new global trading currency but that’s just a pipe dream. They have strong currency controls because their ultra rich would run the moment they could.

14·10 months agoBad comparison. Trump and Musk are nowhere near as cool as Loki. I’d stay down since I can’t stand even more of their ramblings.

When it comes to businesses and money I’m sure everyone wants to make as much as possible and therefore are applying all possible pressure at all times. It’s that pressure from Visa and Mastercard is much stronger because you’re not going to be able to run a business effectively without taking payments that way.
Card processing should be a service that’s provided by a central government and even capitalists would be happy about it but we live in a neoliberal hegemony.
Banks could be losing money on transactors hoping they’d make it through different channels as well. That doesn’t change that boots theory can be seen everywhere and that system has been set up as it is by the wealthy.

Technology@lemmy.world•Was the whole TikTok drama a bait-and-switch to make Trump look good?English
7·1 year agoTikTok had to make Trump look good as he presumably saves it so they did that stunt. In the end both sides know TT has to agree to selling majority stake because it isn’t anything China didn’t do to US firms multiple times already.
This post is overrated, you Philistine.

0·1 year agoThis article credits Legal Eagle, embeds the original, is much shorter to read than an 8-minute video and doesn’t require me to wear headphones. Lemmy is a text based social media so it makes sense to favour text sources. Definitely better than linking to some overloaded Invidious instance which seems to be the norm.
I believe all of this is legal thanks to DMCA.

It also shows how bad YouTube is at recommending original things. This video has 1.5m views and 200k likes on TikTok, hence I keep saying that old school internet is still there but you need to know where to look.
