By the way guys, a very similar approximation for 8, which also starts at 9.000 for n=1, but quickly gets much closer to 8 for increasing n, is:

exp{-2(n-1)} + 8

It approaches 8 about as fast as the above method but this one has a simple formula that is usable in python etc.

I wouldn’t use it for precise calculations at NASA, but for banking stuff I think it would be fine :)

you can trucate it and it still only a slightly worse approximation:

987/123 = 8.024

98/12 = 8.167

9/1 = 9.000

The last one is pretty bad you should probably not use it

They could have forgotten about the position setting all together.

You’re assuming that the time machine would just change the time and keep the position but there is no absolute reference frame, so the time machine should use some reference frame in which it keeps the position constant. It would then be common sense to have the time machine keep the position relative to the earth. Anything else would be pretty dumb, unless you want to use your time machine also for space travel to other planets.

why the suns position

That was just an example. It’s either the sun or the center of our galaxy, or some other reference point so if it wasn’t the earth then the sun is the next most logical option.

More importantly it’s the electromagnetic force that keeps atoms together. Gravity only keeps planets and stars together and also solar systems and galaxies, but in ordinary objects it’s totally negligible.

Position isn’t absolute so if this happens this means you knowingly made the time machine memorize position relative to e.g. the sun rather than the earth.

Not that Nazi Germany wasn’t far worse but America is a right now thing, not an 80 years ago thing.

Near my university there was a great desire path because the bike lane went around a patch of grass for no reason. Their ultimate response was to let the company that was digging up a place for a new hospital building dump all of their excess dirt on the grass patch.

So they created a big dirt mountain that covered the entire grass patch and now the only choice left was to follow the bike lane. In the meantime they removed most of the dirt mountain but the desire path hasn’t recovered yet since there’s now a lot of overgrown plants.

I really hope it returns soon because it saved me the full 5 seconds I needed to get to my classes in time.
