While I don’t care for defending celebrities on the internet, I also don’t care for purity testing, and since I have been a booster of his work and ideas on occasion, wanted to do a bit of due diligence and had largely come to the same “smoke but no actual fire” conclusion

He has only posted on exactly one thread, funnily enough about him (but not started by him) and all of the comments I read have been talking about various bits of content, but I did not see anything that I would consider out-of-character or promoting hate in my opinion.
Is this a good look? Not great for sure, since Kiwi Farms is definitely an edgelord paradise. But oddly enough, its at least consistent with his ethos, since he always talks about being bipartisan.

I mean, other sites do, and I can’t control that when I visit them, and I’m probably not going to boycott them right away, but it will put them onto my “actively looking for an alternative” list. Meanwhile my own stuff is never going to be behind cloudflare, and yours doesn’t need to be either, and eventually with enough “you’s” and “me’s” we’ll have our own cloudflare-free internet and the rest of the corporate bullshit can all go choke to death on its own enshittification.

Yea I currently own all of my domains through cloudflare’s registrar and use them for authoritative DNS. Migrating to another registrar and DNS authority sounds pretty annoying.
It’s really easy. Just check the documentation for transfers on the source and destination registrars. I used to do this all the time at a previous job.

I honestly don’t see why any of this should stop someone from using the software.
It’s open source. If you don’t like DHH, his politics, or the people funding Omarchy, then don’t give them money. Don’t donate, don’t sponsor them, don’t contribute upstream.
But the code is out there under the MIT license. Anyone can use it, change it, remove whatever they don’t like, or fork the whole thing.
Using a piece of open-source software doesn’t mean you endorse the politics of whoever wrote it. If that were the standard, we’d probably have to audit the personal beliefs of thousands of developers before installing anything.
And if people really think Omarchy has become some political project, then fork it. Change the branding, change the maintainers, change whatever you want. That’s literally one of the reasons open source is useful.
Boycotting companies you don’t want to financially support is one thing. Treating open-source code itself as politically contaminated is another, and I don’t think that makes much sense.

I use Fedora. I obviously don’t “have to” use Omarchy.
But the existence of alternatives has nothing to do with whether using a piece of software means endorsing its author. Otherwise software selection just becomes an ideological loyalty test.
Using it increases the adoption numbers which can lead to more adoption, and therefore funding. It’s indirect, but it still shows support for the author.
To me, DHH being a toolshed isn’t even the worst part of an LLM coded slop “distro” that recently had a significant RCE vulnerability that required the bare minimum to exploit. Every OS / distro also has vulnerabilities pop up, but that’s a known issue with slop code. DHH being a racist cunt is just the cherry on top.

Your points are correct. If they were about an irreplaceable library where there were only one or two options then yeah that’d be fine.
But there aren’t. This is a Linux “distro” with a thousand other options. It’s literally just a Linux distro with a few dot files added. There’s zero reason to ever use this distro.

There is a level of friction associated with changing anything like this for ideological reasons, and everyone has to have their own ways of deciding which ones are worth pushing against, according to them.

Since last year, Linux mint got $280k donations. Omarchy in the last few months got 15 MILLION. Linux mint maintains 2 distros, and 1 desktop environment, and is basically the gold standard for newbie friendly distros. Omarchy is a few dotfiles and a pile of nazis.

Voicing again my agreement, all of this energy going against DHH could be put into a fork and that would be way more powerful and effective of a move.
It’s got kind of a tai chi element - move in the direction of the vector don’t try to go against it. It’s popular for a reason, and you don’t have to throw the baby out with the bath water. There are many things today that you could hyperfocus on the evil aspect of that people still use in their daily lives because it brings them utility.
I used Omarchy and it inspired me to make a NixOS version of it that I called Omnixient :) Thanks to the open-source nature I now have my own awesome config that has brought me a lot of fulfillment and productivity I did not have before.

I’m no trained software developer (learned C++ and python from mech engineering & physics) that can reliably maintain a repo people might depend on and this just seems like people flinging shit around.
